Picnic on the Runway stellt die Frage nach kulturellen Klischees und medialen Transformationen.

Im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung steht das traditionelle chinesische Märchen Ashima aus dem Mythos der Sani aus Yunnan. In der Geschichte verwandelt sich nach  einem Unfall

die weiblich gelesene Person Ashima in einen Felsen, dem eine magische Kraft zugesprochen wird. Der seit 2007 zur UNESCO gehörende Steinwald Shilin in Kunming bewahrt heute das Andenken an diese denkwürdige Transformation und sorgt für eine touristen gerechte Vermarktung, die spätestens seit der Verfilmung von Liu Qiong im Jahr 1964 zum populären Allgemeingut gehört. Ashima war der erste Farbfilm, der in der Volksrepublik China gedreht wurde und wurde in der Folgezeit als Peking-Oper, Yunnan-Oper und Sani-Oper aufgeführt.

Christoph Westermeier verbindet Fotografien, die er in Shilin gemacht hat, mit Aufnahmen des Filmes von 1964 und weiteren Ashima Devotionalien. Flankiert wird die Ausstellung von zwei Tableaus, die sich mit der Präsentation kulturellen Erbes in unterschiedlichen Kontexten befassen und der Serie Sublime Society of Steaks.




Picnic on the Runway explores cultural clichés and transformations in the media. The exhibition centres on the traditional Chinese folktale Ashima from the mythology of the Sani people of Yunnan. In the story, following an accident, the female char

acter Ashima is transformed into a rock said to possess magical powers. The Shilin stone forest in Kunming, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007, preserves the memory of this remarkable transformation and ensures its promotion to tourists; it has been part of popular culture since at least the release of Liu Qiong’s film adaptation in 1964. Ashima was the first colour film to be shot in the People’s Republic of China and was subsequently staged as a Peking Opera, Yunnan Opera and Sani Opera.

Christoph Westermeier combines photographs he took in Shilin with stills from the 1964 film and other Ashima memorabilia. The exhibition is flanked by two tableaux that explore the presentation of cultural heritage in different contexts, as well as the series Sublime Society of Steaks.
