DIE HORIZONTALE GRAND TOUR
2020


Christoph Westermeier reist, und das zeitgleich durch mehrere Länder, Epochen und Medien. Mit der Wandinstallation "Die Horizontale Grand Tour" unternimmt er eine Bildungsreise, die nicht nur die Präsenz klassischer Reisefotografie und historischer Kulturgüter im kollektiven Gedächtnis der Besucher*innen abfragt, sondern auch den künstlerischen Raum der Fotografie erkundet. Dabei trifft Böhmischer Barock auf Naturidylle und Griechische Bildwerke auf Ansichten vom Mittelmeer: Westermeier bedruckt Buchseiten antiquarischer Publikationen mit persönlichen Reisebildern; er überlagert, collagiert und arrangiert. Im gerahmten Neben- und Übereinander der Fotografien erbeben sich überraschende Paarungen und neue Bedeutungen.

Christoph Westermeier travels, and he travels through several countries, eras and media simultaneously. His wall installation "Die Horizontale Grand Tour" is an educational journey that does not only investigate the presence of traditional travel photography and historical cultural assets in the collective memory of the visitors but also explores the artistic field of photography. Bohemian Baroque meets natural idyll and Greek sculptures meet views of the Mediterranean: Westermeier prints personal travel images on the pages of antiquarian publications; he overlays, collages, and arranges them. The framed juxtaposition and superimposition of the photographs lead to surprising pairings and new meanings.
